A catalytic converter is a small exhaust emission control device which converts exhaust gases and other pollutants from an internal combustion engine to less- pollutant pollutants to catalyze an oxygen reduction reaction. There are many kinds of gaseous emissions that can be combusted by the catalytic converter. They include hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide along with nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and others. These are gaseous emissions that react with oxygen in the exhaust system and create more pollutants that are usually more dangerous to the environment. They also release high levels of nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere, which can be harmful to the environment.

The most common type of the catalytic converter and the one that is most often found in vehicles are the combusted gas mixture, also known as a ‘hot exhaust’. This is formed by the combustion of exhaust gases and other gases in the engine. The catalytic converter reduces this by combining oxygen from exhaust gases and hydrogen in the muffler. This creates hot exhaust gases which do not react with oxygen in air and are therefore safer for the environment.

Many catalytic converters available today don’t burn platinum, but instead use palladium or silver. While palladium can remove pollutants very well, it is also more costly to produce than platinum. If you need a catalytic converter for your car, make sure it is made of platinum. It is the only metal which completely releases its energy if it is exposed to exhaust fumes.
