Many people have asked me to explain what salt cavern storage means. It’s a new term that’s popping up in the news, especially when the issue is renewable energy or hydrocarbon storage. To best explain it, I will break it down into three parts: salt, cavern, and, storage.
We need to lose the idea that being self-sufficient means sacrificing comfort. That to embrace the idea you have to produce everything you need yourself. That you can’t get started unless you have all the space, funds and desire to just drop out of society and isolate yourself. That the philosophy is, and can only be, embraced by “hippies”. Who have become so idealistically green that they have forgotten that the world is so over populated that it is impossible for it to be sustainable for all of us to join them, and have made the idea unpopular by the way they look down their nose at the rest of us.
As an investor, how can I help sustain the earth? I call it sustainable investing. It is simply investing in companies whose products or services promote the sustainability of the planet. Companies providing technology for renewable energy is a perfect example. In particular, I will talk about solar companies in this post.
The energy company is the one we are eagerly waiting for. The reliability of fossil fuel for long is not dependable. The disappearance or the slow depletion of fossil fuel is a reality.
These heating systems can be either electric or water-based. Heating coils or pipes are installed in the floor of your home. They are heated electrically or with hot water. The heat is distributed by radiation. Radiant heat is considered to be a very healthy way to heat and it does use a lot less energy.
The most expensive type of renewable energy sources out there to create is known as hydropower. Hopefully we can find a way to benefit from it for a lower cost. Since so much of the surface of the Earth is covered with water it would be wonderful to be able to take advantage of creating energy from it. Since it is so expensive though it only contributes to about 7% of the total energy created in the United States.
It is often presumed that self-sufficiency in energy is only for nerds, but this is not true, it is now within the reach of every family or household. If you have lots of money, a solar or wind powered system will cost you about $45,000 and it will take about ten years to recover your investment by getting off the grid. However, you can have the same apparatus for much less than half that amount.
The last bit of encouragement I have for people interested in how to make wind power has to do with the two biggest reasons people are interested in this path: savings and the environment. When a person becomes more energy self sufficient, they no longer require so much energy from their electric company. The bills decrease and the expendable income increases. You will have more money for things you need! In addition, it is clean energy. Clean energy equals a cleaner environment. These are reasons to seriously consider wind power.
